What I learned from my 20% Time Project: A Sample Response

One skill I focused on was cutting and chopping things. I had lots of opportunities because of the meals I cooked. I often had to use things such as onions, fresh garlic, and cilantro. These kinds of things require chopping. I definitely got better and learned more efficient ways to do this. Anyways, back to the specific meals I cooked. Often, I had to be doing multiple things at once. For example, I would have some things that would have to be stirred or watched, but at the same time had to be making a sauce. Some of the meals also required me to continuously come back to stir them while they cooked. Before these meals, I had had a little experience with cooking already. I used to cook with my dad all the time in the kitchen, but naturally as I got older, I became busier and less interested in that sort of thing. I only got back into it recently. And this time, it’s been mostly on my own. This project is what helped me get back into it. But even before the project, I wanted to start easing back into it. I made two meals on my own partly to just kind of see where I was at. I made Mexican lasagna and meatloaf. Mexican lasagna involves different layers of things. Those layers included a ground beef mixture, cottage cheese and sour cream mixture, cheddar cheese, and tortilla chips. And the meatloaf is pretty self explanatory. But making these meals was before I had some of the skills I’ve learned with this project. Like I said, I definitely improved my cutting skills. I also got more efficient in the kitchen in general. At first, I didn’t really know much of what I was doing, but as I continued to cook, I gradually got more comfortable in the kitchen and the sort of things that went into cooking. Another thing I learned is different types of spices and what they do to flavor certain things. Spices are used A LOT in cooking. I mean, what’s a meal without flavor? Not really a very good one. You can do all sorts of things in terms of flavor. You can even add your own little touches to a meal to make it unique and your own! Another thing I got to work on with this project is not necessarily about cooking. I got to practice my writing skills (specifically the TREAT format), because I wrote blog posts about each of the specific meals I cooked. I also learned that I could be unmotivated sometimes, when I knew I had to cook. It’s definitely not the easiest thing. But despite that, I will definitely continue to cook because like I said, it’s a great skill. Continuing to cook will also mean that I will progress with all the skills I’ve been working on and also acquire new ones! Thanks for listening and I encourage you to consider trying cooking too! There are many benefits. (add in stuff about visuals and also add in short demonstration of something like my cutting skills)

        DO NOW  - Harper Lee

DIRECTIONS
Read the paragraph below about Harper Lee and respond to everyone in the chat answering the following question...

Question: What are some of your impressions of Harper Lee after reading this paragraph?

By Charles Leerhsen
SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE
JUNE 2010

To spend an hour in Monroeville, Alabama, is to know why Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, ranks as one of the crankiest writers on the planet. Strongly inclined to put aside the hype and hoopla and let literature speak for itself, Lee, the best-known native of the town (pop. 6,372) that served as the model for her novel’s Maycomb, has found herself living a short drive from one restaurant called the Mockingbird Grill and another named Radley’s Fountain, after Boo Radley, the character in Mockingbird who might be voted Least Likely to Become a Restaurateur. That would be a mere T-shirt’s toss from a gift shop peddling Mockingbird hats, tote bags, necklaces, Christmas ornaments, refrigerator magnets, wrist bands (inscribed “I see it, Scout, I see it!”) and paper fans. The gift shop is in the venerable courthouse where as a child Lee watched her father practice law, and which she later rendered so vividly in her book. The courthouse has long since been turned into a Mockingbird museum, to the delight of a constant stream of camera-toting tourists, foreign and domestic. I sympathize with Lee, who has steadfastly refused to take part in the merchandising of her most famous accomplishment. Life can’t be easy when everything you hate about success stands between you and the Piggly Wiggly.
