Copy the following character chart into your notebook.  You may want to use it for today's activity. 


LEARNING TARGETS               

1.  I can describe the main characters of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

2.  I can analyze a text to understand character traits and motivations.

        MINI-LESSON          

1.  Distribute the graphic novel version of chapter one of the book.

2.  Setting: 1930s, Maycomb, Alabama

    Plot: Two main stories.  Plot 1: Jem, Dill, and Scout try to get Boo Radle to come out of his house. Plot 2:  Atticus defends Tom Robinson in the rape trial of Mayella Ewell.

3.  Themes we will discuss:  Compassion and Taking a Stand.

4.  The framing of a novel.


        WORK TIME                          

1.  Read Chapter 1 of the graphic novel.

2. Complete the character analysis worksheet with your tablemates.

3.  Create a poster for your character that communicates the following information:

    a.  a rough sketch of what they look like.

    b.  a list of traits that define their personality.

    c.  any other items that symbolize the character or have special importance to them.

    d. the name of the character at the top of your poster.

4.  Do a gallery walk to view the posters of other groups in order to fill in the rest of your character analysis worksheet.

CITATIONS
a quote (evidence) from or reference to a book, paper, or author.  Think of it as a mailing address.  Citations help you find the source an author used.  They also help you avoid plagiarism.

There are two types... 
1) In-line Citations and 2) Works Cited Entries
