    The majestic lion writhed in pain, its body twisting in strange patterns, after being shot with a tranquilizer gun at close  range.

    Graduating from high school was a a huge achievement in Hank's life and a pivotal moment in the life of his mother as well.

        Mini-Lesson: Word Choice


        1. Author's tone:  the feeling the author is trying to engender in the reader!
        2. There are over 1,000,000 words in the English language.
        3. Often, we only use a fraction of those words to convey what we mean.
        4. Authors are very careful to select words that will communicate the tone they are trying to achieve.
        5. Authors of horror stories use words that convey terror, fear and shock.
        6. Authors of romance novels choose words that convey beauty, joy, and tranquility.
        7. Watch this video on Word Choice... to help you understand this concept even more!
        8. In the short story, The Masque of the Red Death, Edgar Allen Poe's choice of words engender horror in his reader.

                  Based on the novel, what can you infer about what will happen to Ha and her family?  Be sure to use details from the text to support your answer.  Note the textual evidence in quotes!

                       I think that Ha’s family will have to deal with serious danger because of the coming war. I believe this because Ha says that the fortune teller “predicts our lives will twist inside out.”  This means something big is going to change for her family, probably not in a good way.  For example, she says,  “Maybe soldiers will no longer patrol our neighborhood,” and “...maybe I can jump rope after dark,” but in stanza three she hears on the playground that the bang chung (a delicacy eaten during the holiday of Tet) will be “smeared with blood.”  These details about soldiers and blood make it sound really scary, like things are getting dangerous.  I believe that Ha’s family is in danger.
