MP2 - Week 3

     DO Now - Copy and Try It!                                     

Entry Title:  T A G

  • T = Title (if handwriting underline; if typing use italics)
  • A = Author (Capitalize First and Last Name)
  • G = Genre (short story, novel, article, etc...)

    Always use TAG in the topic sentence of your literary essays!

    Example:  In the novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, the main character, Ha, is kind, rebellious and loves snacks.  

You Try It...
Use the following information to write your own topic sentence for a literary essay...

Title: The Most Dangerous Game
Author:  Richard Connell
Genre:  Short Story

Essay question:  Who is Whitney?___________________________________

     Work Time                                               
  • You will be assigned a Peer Review Group by your teacher.
  • Share your essay with each person in your group via Google Docs. 
  • The Process
    • Select a Director for the group.
    • Select one person's essay to review.  This is the Reviewee.
    • Everyone should display the Reviewee's essay on their their Chromebook.
    • The Director will then read the essay out loud as the group follows along.
    • Each person should then check the essay for typos and correct them.
    • Then, go through the rubric as a group and highlight each part of the essay according  to the rubric.
    • If the Reviewee's essay is missing anything or needs to be improved, the group should help them figure out what needs to be fixed. 
    • The suggestions should be made on the essay so that the Reviewee can address them later.

        Entry Title: Two Words One Sentence

        DIRECTIONS: Write a sentence in which you use two vocabulary words from List II in one sentence.  It must be clear you understand the meaning of the words by the sentence you write.
        • Example:  The pestilence that made millions upon millions sick for months seemed to sagaciously choose its victims selecting only the extremely poor as victims.

            DIRT Day Expectations

            1. Do the following BEFORE the bell rings…
              1. Open your DIRT Day Assignment in Google Classroom.
              2. Be in your seat reading.
            2. Focus on your reading the entire period.
            3. Do not sub-vocalize during DIRT.
            4. Complete 10 thoughts using the Active Reading Model by the end of the period. Do more for extra credit.



            If You Finish a Book…
            In an email to Mr. DeGrandis, write a review about your book in 3-paragraph essay format.
            Guidelines for the Essay:
            • ¶ 1 - title, author and genre of the novel and your opinion of the book (controlling idea).
            • ¶ 2 - short summary of the book and include at least two text-based examples from the book
                     that support your controlling idea in ¶
            • ¶ 3 - explain why you would or would not recommend this book to a friend and where they might be able to find it or purchase it.

            If You Forgot Your Book…
            • Choose a book from the class library or Mr. DeGrandis will give you one.
            • Be sure to bring your book next week.

            If You Want to Switch Books…
            In an email to Mr. DeGrandis, write an Abandon Book Essay.
            Guidelines:


            • ¶ 1 – title, author and genre of the novel you are abandoning and
                      three reasons you don’t like the book (controlling idea).
            • ¶ 2 through 4 - Develop each reason using text-based details from the book.
            • ¶ 5 - Offer your suggestions for other novels you have read that another student might enjoy.

            9.  writhe v. (writhes, writhing, writhed) - to make continual twisting movements of the body.

            The majestic lion writhed in pain, its body twisting in strange patterns, after being shot with a tranquilizer gun at close range.


            10.  pivotal adj. (pivot, pivoting, pivots, pivoted) - of crucial importance in relation to the success of something else.

            Graduating from high school was a huge achievement in Hank's life and a pivotal moment in the life of his mother as well.

                   7.  contagion n. (contagions) - the spreading of a disease or idea from one person to another through close contact

                  Once the idea of storming the Bastille took hold, it spread like a contagion among the people

                  8.  pestilence n. (pestilences) - a fatal epidemic disease, especially the bubonic plague

                  The Ebola virus is a horrific pestilence that was just as easily spread as the bubonic plague.

                       Mini-Lesson:  Evaluating Evidence        
                     
                  • When you are writing an essay, it's really important to be sure that your evidence is accurate, reliable (credible sources) and supports the topic sentence.
                  • How do you do this?
                    • Identify the claim (topic sentence)
                    • Identify the evidence.
                    • See if the evidence supports the topic sentence (claim)

                       Work Time - Who is Ha Anchor Chart              
                  • Using your Who is Ha? Anchor Chart (go to Google Classroom) and the novel, find at least four pieces of evidence that are accurate, reliable and support your topic (characteristics of Ha's personality, values, beliefs or physical appearance).
                  • Actively Read up to page 41 in the novel.  Fill in evidence about Ha as you go!
                  • Share your evidence with one other student and fill in your chart with any evidence they had that is different from yours.
                  • Check their evidence to be sure it is solid!
