Read the following excerpt from Psychology Today © 1991-2016 Sussex Publishers, LLC | HealthProfs.com © 2002-2016 Sussex Directories, Inc. about the Golden Rule.  Then, answer the question that follows...


[In order to keep the Golden Rule,] one of us has to lower our expectations so the other of us can maintain expectations.

To illustrate, let’s say I’m the CEO of Big Company X and my expectation is that I can destroy the earth’s resources as though there’s no tomorrow. And no, I don’t want to change my expectation.

Let’s say you represent the Environmentalists. You have different designs in this world. You expect conservation and don’t want to change your expectation either.

One world, two negotiators, in a win-lose situation. Either you change your expectations so I can keep mine the same or I change my expectations so you can keep yours the same. Let’s apply our trusty or at least trusted Golden Rule to resolve our conflict.  The conversation might go something like this...

Me: You want me to stop destroying the Earth right?

You: Yup.

Me: Because it’s dashing your expectations of a healthy environment.

You: That’s right.

Me.  You don’t want your expectations destroyed?

You: You got it.

Me: You’d rather my expectations were destroyed instead of yours?

You: True.

Me:  Well, you’ve just admitted that what you want is for me to agree with your expectations by changing what I want (to use up all the Earth’s resources).

You: Well, of course.

Me. But by the Golden Rule, you should do that unto me. That means you should lower your expectations of a healthy environment so that I can maintain my expectations.

You: You’d like that, wouldn’t you?

Me. You bet I would.

You: Then by the same Golden Rule, you should lower your expectations in order to support mine.

Me: And you’d like that wouldn’t you?

You: You bet.

Me: Then by the same Golden Rule, you should lower your expectations in order to support mine.

Round and round it goes in an infinite loop: I should do unto you as you’d do unto me as I’d do unto you as you’d do unto me—which wouldn’t be a problem if we were in a win-win situation and we wanted the same thing but is unresolvable when we want opposite things.

THE GOLDEN RULE IN TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Watch this video clip when Atticus explains his version of The Golden Rule to Scout after her first day at school.



          ASSESSMENT          

With your tablemates, create a simple skit that either supports the Golden Rule or debunks the Golden Rule.

Or, you can select a scene from the novel that supports the Golden Rule and re-enact it.

Be prepared to act out your skit for the class.


GUIDELINES

1.  Keep it PG-13.

2.  No action should take place on the floor (no one falling, laying down, etc...)

3.  You will have ten minutes to create your skit.





     TUESDAY      4-26-22      C-Day: How to Complete the Study Guide and Theme Tracker

Find and open your Study Guide Questions and your Theme Tracker documents in the TKMB folder we created in your Google Drive.


LEARNING TARGETS    

I can answer important questions about the novel and track thematic elements using the SGQs and Theme Tracker docs.


        MINI-LESSON          

Demos of how to fill out SGQs and Theme Tracker.  


        WORK TIME          

Answer the SGQs for chapters 1-3 of the novel and complete at least one example in your theme tracker for one of the themes you are tracking.



          ASSESSMENT          

You will receive a classwork grade for each of these activities once we finish the novel.





     WEDNESDAY      4-27-22      D-Day: Begin Reading the Screenplay for TKMB

Find and open the screenplay for the novel.  Here is the link to the screenplay.  Please open it with Kami.


Be sure to bookmark this so you can open it easily as we go through reading the screenplay.

WATCH THIS VIDEO on the proper formatting of a screenplay.  By understanding the proper format, you will more easily be able to read an actual screenplay, like To Kill a Mockingbird.
