      Sample Inferences
      1. In the photo with all the cars I can infer that people may be trying to escape some natural disaster, like a tsunami.
      2. In the photo of the helicopter, I can infer that people are trying to escape to safety.

      Learning Targets
        1. I can support my inferences with evidence from a text.
        2. I can participate in discussions about the text with a partner, small group, and the whole class.

      MINI-LESSON:  Mix and Mingle Activity
        • This activity will help you create new inferences between the event you have seen in the Gallery Walk and information from the informational text we will be reading about the fall of Saigon.
        • You will receive two sentence strips.
        • Read them to yourself.
        • Turn and Talk: Read your strips to a neighbor.
        • Do you think you have the whole story based on the pictures from yesterday and the sentence strips?
      ______________________________________________________________

      PRACTICE
Sentence Strip Envelopes and Sentence Strips:  Please do not write, tear, fold or otherwise damage these so other students in other classes can use them for this activity today as well!  Thank You!

      • Mr. D. will give you an envelope containing two sentence strips.
      • When asked to begin, wander the room with your sentence strips.
      • Look for peers that have different strips than your own.  Stay together until you collect a total of 4-5 people.  No one should have the same sentence strips.
      • You will have five minutes to mix and mingle.
      • Select an area of the room in which you can meet with your group.
      • Arrange the strips in a logical order.  You should be able to explain why you put your strips in the order you did.
      • It's OK if you have more questions than answers at this point!
      ______________________________________________________________

        Mini-Lesson
          • You have looked at images and read some details about the topic of this module.
          • Today we will begin our study of the novel Inside Out & Back Again reading closely by reading the first poem of the novel, 1975: Year of the Cat.

          • Focus Question
            • Ha says, "No one would believe me, but at times I would prefer wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama."
            • Based on the photos you saw and the sentence strips we read, what do you think might have happened to a little girl to make her say she preferred war at home (Saigon) to peace in Alabama (The United States)?
        • Getting the Gist:  Getting your initial reaction to what the text is mostly about. You will do this now as you hear the first poem of the novel, 1975: The Year of the Cat read aloud.
          • Read Aloud: Follow the text with your eyes as you listen to the poem being read.
            Turn and Talk
What is your initial sense of the what the poem is mostly about?

          • What are some details that strike you and why?
          • Hey! Don't forget good group manners! (invite others to share, be polite, disagree kindly)
