      Entry Title:  T A G

  • T = Title (if handwriting underline; if typing use italics)
  • A = Author (Capitalize First and Last Name)
  • G = Genre (short story, novel, article, etc...)

    Always use TAG in the topic sentence of your essay!

    Example:  In the novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, the main character, Ha, is kind, rebellious and loves snacks.  This is because...

    • EXPLAINS why  your textual evidence (example) proves your topic sentence is true!
    • Sample starters...
      This proves Ha is rebellious because...
      This explains why Ha is kind because...
      This example illustrates how much Ha loves sweets because...

    • Demo of how to find the explanation in an essay.
    • Grammar micro-lesson: Punctuating direct quotes from the novel.

           Work Time       
      • Using a peer's essay, identify the explanation.  If there isn't one, write one for the person.
      • Double check that the student author has properly punctuated the examples they used from the novel.
      • Lastly, peer edit the rest of the essay and suggest edits.

            Entry Title:  Character Motivation

      • The motive behind a character's thoughts, actions and deeds.  Examples: love, greed, loyalty etc...
      • For example:  Many things that Ha's mother says or does are motivated by her optimism.  She tends to look on the bright side of even the most dire situations.

      • I can identify what a character's motive is.
      • I can make inferences about what motivates a character to say and do the things they do.
      • I can back up my inference with textual evidence from the novel.

           Mini-Lesson     
      • Demo of how to infer a character's motive.
      • Demo of how to highlight in peer editing mode using Google Docs.

      Here is a list of character traits that doubles as a list of character motives.

      • Using a peer's Character Motivation Anchor Chart highlight the character's motivation.
      • Then read the three pieces of evidence.  If the connection between the motive and the example is...
      • Clear = highlight it Green
      • Sorta Clear = highlight it Yellow
      • Not Clear = highlight it Red
