MONDAY   3-14  A-day: Socratic Seminar Warm-Up

      Read the article below and consider the following question: 
      Does our education system adequately prepare students for success in today's world?

     Work Time       
  • Break desks into two circles, one surrounding the other
  • Socratic seminar practice - see opening question in "Do Now"
  • Inner circle has brief discussion about article; outside circle notes any insights, questions on Google doc (Period 1) (Period 2)
  • Switch if time remains 
  • Closing debrief: what did we notice? What are we still wondering about?

         DO Now - Set a Goal    
         

    Select one of the below options as your goal for seminar today and write it at the top of your Questions page:

    • I will refer to the text, other readings and other people to support ideas with evidence.
    • I will ask questions that demonstrate my thinking.
    • I will follow up other participants' remarks with comments, questions or compliments.
    • Since I am shy, I will try to speak 2 times.
    • I will encourage others to speak by asking them to participate.

    Then, meet with your Buffalo partner to discuss which of your questions you would especially like addressed during seminar today. Decide which one of you will join the "inner circle" discussion first. 

    Periods 6 & 9: 

    Entry title: TKAM Drawing

    DO NOW: Draw a picture that depicts Scout's first day at school. You might want your drawing to include:

    • Miss Caroline scolding Scout for reading and writing
    • Scout standing up for Walter
    • Scout beating up Walter for getting her in trouble
    • Lunch at the Finch house
    • The cootie coming out of Burris's hair
