Common Formative Assessment Teacher Notes for the Class
General Comments for the Class
Remember to follow the TREAT format! Many of you forgot to explain how their examples prove their topic sentences. For example, saying, “This proves he had fear about being bullied,” is not an explanation. It doesn’t prove anything. Better to say, “This proves he feared the bullies because in the end, he was afraid to walk past them.”
Typically, test essay questions build on each other. In this test, the first essay is about the controlling idea (main idea, theme or topic - all the same). The second is about how the point of view of the story supports the main idea.
Many of you forgot to include the TAG (title, author, genre) in your topic sentence. See examples below...
Essay 1
The best central idea of the story is - We overcome our fears by facing them.
Many people skipped the R, the reason. This is because...
Essay 2 - Two ways to respond...
The attitude of a narrator is the tone (how the author feels about their subject matter). We discussed this when we did our 6-Word Horror Stories - tone and mood. In this story, the author’s tone is one of fear or even shame. This supports the central idea of the story above. For example, "In the short story, The Terror by Junot Diaz the central idea is to face your fears in order to overcome them."
Or, you could have talked about how the Point of View is first person - where the author speaks directly to the reader and how this helped support the central idea of fear. For example, "In the short story The Terror by Junot Diaz the narrator's first person point of view helps the reader better connect with his experiences by sharing his thoughts as the plot progresses."
