- The motive behind a character's thoughts, actions and deeds. Examples: love, greed, loyalty etc...
- For example: Many things that Ha's mother says or does are motivated by her optimism. She tends to look on the bright side of even the most dire situations.

- I can make inferences about what motivates a character to say and do the things they do.
- I can back up my inference with textual evidence from the novel.
