How might this excerpt from the novel show that Scout is learning about compassion?

Jem stayed moody and silent for a week. As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem’s skin and walk around in it: if I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him.

Tip:  If you are tracking compassion, this a great example to use.

1.  At this point in the novel, everything changes and the novel shifts its focus to the trial of Tom Robinson.

2.  Finch - is a type of bird and Scout's last name.

3.  When Miss Maudie's house catches fire, Scout says, "Just as the birds know where to go when it rains, I knew when there was trouble in our street."

4.  Later, in chapter 10, the children receive air rifles and are warned they may shoot any bird they like, but are warned never to kill a mockingbird. Why?
