        LEARNING TARGETS

I can analyze a poem for tone, mood and author's identity.

        MINI-LESSON

REVIEW

What is tone?  Tone is how the author feels about what they wrote.

What is mood?  Mood is how the author is trying to make you feel a certain way about what they wrote.

WATCH THIS LESSON ON MOOD AND TONE!

Authors can reveal their identity (who they are) through mood, tone and language.

Here is a great example...

The Rose that Grew from Concrete

by Tupac Shakur

Did you hear about the rose that grew

from a crack in the concrete?

Proving nature's law is wrong it

learned to walk with out having feet.

Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams,

it learned to breathe fresh air.

Long live the rose that grew from concrete

when no one else ever cared.

Go to THIS PADLET and write down words that indicate the author's tone.

What emotion(s) might the author be trying to get you to feel.  What mood is he trying to create?

2.  Class discussion using Accountable Talk: How can an author reveal their identity through tone and mood.
